Resumen

The elution behaviour of several standards ionic polymers, such as poly (L-glutamic acid) (PGA), sodium poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSSNa) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) has been analyzed by aqueous size exclusion chromatography (ASEC) as a function of pH and ionic strength (I) of eluent, on both inorganic- and organic-based packings. Quantitative evaluation of secondary effects, such as ionic contributions, is undertaken taking into account electric double-layer effects and the effective radius of polyion. A second order dependence of the elution volume on I-1/2is obtained in fair agreement with experimental results. Suggestions on quantitative evaluation of hydrophobic effects are also pointed out.
