Abstract

Peatlands are singular systems contributing to the geodiversity of a region where peat is deposited. It forms a characteristic recent and fossil ecosystem very sensible to the climatology, topography, hydrologica[ conditions, fauna, flora and local tectonic. It is a very good record of events in the last thousand years, as à,paleodiversity reservoir with high organic tissues conservation, as well as very sensible to the geochemical variations and general environmental and orography conditions. Legislation consider mainly ecological or landscape point of view (wetland or avifauna conservation), nevertheless, the aspects of the peat deposits as paleontology, paleoclimatology, paleogeography and paleoantropology and industrial activities record must be also consider for the total peatland. A Protocol for the study and conservation of peatlands is proposed.
