Abstract

Extensible statistical systems offer the potential of developing data analysis functions further to the common existing ones, making feasible to users to suit the system to their needs. The way this extending capability is featured is reviewed for three extensible statistical programs: SPSS, S-Plus, and ViSta. This review sets up the description of the options offered in the ViSta system to develop new data analysis methods and, more specifically, the programming model based on plugins that this program features in its last release. An important benefit of the plugin-based development altemative consists of the complete integration of the implemented statistical function in the ViSta main interface, taking advantage of ali the resources already available in this system.
