Abstract

This article describes the morphological and acoustical evolution of theatre building throughout history. Description begins in ancient Greek and Roman architectural typologies, and goes to Italian Opera Houses of eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, in order to find inherited elements among different theatre models and to emphasize their differences. The article summarizes the acoustic characteristics of each studied room highlighting their virtues and faults, and explains their sonorous behaviour.
