Abstract

This study examines the antecedents of organizational ambidexterity in small and Medium Enterprises (SIVlES). Ambidexterity is a dynamic capability that allows companies to achieve high performance in situations where they must adapt to their environment. It is argued that ambidexterity incorporates a structural component, meaning that it depends on previous levels of ambidexterity, but it is also determined by the company's corporate strategy options. Specifically, it is asserted that external growth through mergers, acquisitions and co-operation agreements may help explain the level and equilibrium of ambidexterity in SMEs. This hypothesis is confirmed in the empirical study conducted using multivar-iate regressions on a sample of 117 industrial SMEs.
