Abstract

Mapping, stratigraphy and fossil fauna of Lower Silurian rocks from Monegré (Zaragoza province) are shown for the first time herein. A 230 m thick detrital sequence (shales with interbedded sandstones and quartzites) has been studied; it shows evidence of contact metamorphism and its materials are quite recrystallized. These materials, which contain remains of brachiopods, ichnofossils, graptolites, trilobites, bivalves, cephalopods and gastropods, are included in the Bádenas Formation. This fossil content allows us to date these levels as Wenlock (Lower Silurian).
