Resumen

En la moderna lucha contra la segregación y el racismo en Estados Unidos la educación jugó un papel destacado desde 1954, cuando el Tribunal Supremo declaró anticonstitucional la segregación escolar. El presente artículo analiza desde una perspectiva de la historia política y social el contexto que hizo posible la sentencia Brown vs Topeka, la enorme resistencia blanca que desató desde el segregacionismo sudista y los avances notables de la integración escolar entre las décadas de 1960 y 1970 de la mano del «liberalismo racial» del Partido Demócrata. También explora los retrocesos evidentes desde 1974, impulsados por un republicanismo conservador, que en todo el país comenzó a explotar políticamente el resentimiento racial blanco frente a las políticas federales de apoyo a las minorías.
