Abstract

The study of emotional management and its relationship to the type of motivation involved in sport is a subject of great importance for the impact that these dimensions have in the athletes’ health and in their sports performance. In this work, it was observed the influence of gender and the type of sport of the psychological characteristics of the athlete, the type of motivational counseling and emotional intelligence of them. Besides, it was analyzed the influence of the psychological characteristics of the players depending on how many years the players have practiced sport. The sample consisted of 78 four-team athletes both male and female who answered some questionnaires. The analysis found differences in gender (e.g., women scored higher on Task Orientation, F1, 74=9.06; p=.004; partial η2=.109), as well as by type of sport practiced (e.g., soccer players scored higher than volleyball players on Motivation, F1,70=46.48; p<.000; η2 parcial=.399). In addition, there were differences in the emotional intelligence based on the number of years they have practiced sport (F3,61= 2.71; p=.05; partial η2=.118).
