Abstract

This article offers a reflexion on the consideration of the discipline restoration in the first decades of the 20th century. It refers to the analysis of the correspondence sent by the candidate José Chacón for the position of restorer announced in 1920 by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando (Madrid). A series of personal interpretations were foreseen leading to a particular definition of the profession. Just like Francisco de Goya did in 1801 with the transgressor report which questioned the consequences that the restoration undertakes. The lack of solid principles, that a century later Chacón summarized with his conclusions as the process that opens a path to modern conservation and restoration. The nineteenth century criteria, that are still valid, are extended and the complex world of institutionalized restoration is introduced.
