Abstract

This conference paper describes an experience carried out in the course Theory and History of Physi-cal Activity and Sport, taught in the first year of the Physical Activity and Sport Sciences bachelor of the Uni-versity of Valencia. The experience was conducted during the academic year 2014-15 with one of the course groups, consisting of 49 students. The aim was to determine the prior knowledge level about some basic cultural aspects related to the con-tents of the subject, with which stu-dents access these studies. For that purpose, a written test was made the day of the subject presentation. The test consisted of questions like: “¿What is sport?”; “Who was Pierre de Coubertin?”; ¿Where and when were celebrated the first modern Olympic Games?”; “¿Who was Juan Antonio Samaranch?”, “Who is the current president of the CSD?”, among other. In the second class, students asked for the results. However, the teacher repeated the same test and similar results were ob-tained. The results of this experience show a scarce prior knowledge about this kind of questions and denote a lack of interest and personal initiative to look for the answers.
