Abstract

The number of diabetic patients starting dialysis is increasing in the world, evolving to a true epidemic. These patients showed significant differences with the rest of dialysis patients in their demographic characteristics, complications, comorbidities and treatment goals. They need special handling in most areas of haemodialysis such as dialysis modalities, vascular access, control of diabetes and anaemia, vascular disease and retinopathy, which often are associated to these patients. In this paper we review dialysis indications, when to start dialysis, management of complications and comorbidities and metabolic control of these patients.
