Abstract
The aim of this study was conduct a descriptive analysis of action the set pieces that occurred in the last Confederations Cup in South Africa in 2009, with the aim to demonstrate the impact of such actions in the game. All of the action set pieces were analyzed using an observational methodology. Among all the 1865 action set pieces that occurred in the tournament, only 195 ended with a hit (either foot or head) to goal. The 45% of the goals were achieved in these actions. The results showed that the four teams having the hightest number of goals from set pieces were classified in the first phase, winning the championship the team that more goals in these actions scored.
