Résumé

This paper uses the free disposal hull (FDH) methodology to analyze the efficiency of Spanish seaports. The advantage of this method is that it enables a comparison to be made directly between the ports, whereas traditional data envelopment analysis (DEA) only enables comparisons to be made by projecting a frontier. This direct approach is especially useful for decision-makers because it provides a benchmarking reference. However, the FDH methodology suffers the disadvantage of producing many efficient units so it is difficult to obtain a hierarchal rank of in order to efficiency. This paper presents a method for producing a hierarchy of seaports for the purposes of comparison.
