Abstract
The alleged existence of minimal pairs as uolui - uolûi cannot be used as a proof of a /w/ phoneme in Latin. Neither the argument is congruent or consistent by itself, because the phonetic realizations [w] and [u] are predictable for those alleged pairs, nor the argument data are true, since uolui - uolûi and the like are really not minimal pairs.
