Abstract
Football has become a phenomenon of great impact worldwide and, in recent years, it has undergone a massive commodification so it has acquired disproportionate dimensions in the economic field. This work aims to provide a critical view of the economic side of football and provide insights that might be interesting for sports managers. First, the economic situation of some clubs and continual support to these institutions by the public authorities is discussed, deepening into the most recent case, Valencia Club de Fútbol. Second, we analyze the role of the sporting multinationals and the marketing companies of television rights, as well as the economic interests that football generates in parallel industries. Finally, it concludes by highlighting that, as citizens, we must be aware that this excessive and unrealistic increase in the economic dimension of football is unsustainable and we can not allow preferential treatment with football clubs, so we must require greater regulation and control in the accounts of these entities.
