Abstract

The present study examines the relation between different learning styles that college students have and their preferences for certain materials to support classes. To do this, we consider the four learning styles (active, reflective, theoretical and pragmatic) proposed by Alonso, Gallego and Honey (1997); and the preferences for using three types of instructional materials, such as: mind maps, websites and slides. The results show that the theoretical learning style is related to the preference for using mind maps, whilst the pragmatic style is related to the preference for using websites and slides. As regards active and reflective learning styles, there is not a significant preference for any of the proposed materials. Based upon results, the study of the students' learning styles and their relationship with the support materials they use should be an important focus for improving university teaching practice.
