Resumo

Given to the high prevalence of reading learning difficulties in children, it is important to investigate which are the variables that can promote the development and the learning of this capacity. Thus, the aim of this study is to evaluate the influence of certain reading habits and family attitudes toward reading in the development of naming speed and phonological awareness. Participants were 31 students (46% boys, 54% girls) with a mean age of 5, and their parents. Children were administered RAN and BIL tests and parents a questionnaire prepared ad hoc gathering information about reading habits and time spent on activities related to reading. The results showed positives relations between the naming speed and the time that children spend reading during the week, the weekend and on holidays, and the participation in story telling activities. It also highlighted a link between RAN and phonological awareness. Conclusions confirm the importance of family reading habits in the development of the skills involved in reading learning process.
