Resum
When we speak about ceramics, we are talking about the physical and chemical properties of silicon and the three most important elements contained in porcelain; quartz or silica, feldspar and kaolin. Dental ceramics are basically composed of a vitreous (feldspathic) phase, with a non-periodic atomic, i.e., amorphous structure, and a crystalline periodic atomic phase (silica) in its inside. The different porcelains are classified in an attempt to facilitate the communication between dental professionals, as well as to be able to assign any new porcelain to a group with common features like sintering temperature, composition or handling properties.
