Resumo

Tetracycline stain treatment is a challenge for dentists, however there are several therapeutical alternatives according to the degree of discoloration. External bleaching is recommended for first and second degree stain cases and is suitable for clinical as well as personal use. The results obtained in such cases are satisfactory and free of side effects, although there is a tendency towards recurrence over time. Internal bleaching after root canal treatment is recommended for third and fourth degree tetracycline stains. Positive results are obtained, but the risk of external resorption must be taken into account and can be avoided with a perfectly sealed root canal prior to bleaching. Finally, porcelain laminate veneers, modified with respect to usual techniques, are a fine and permanent solution to this tooth color change problem.
