Resumen
The present investigation analyses the instruments most commonly used to assess the language of international adoptees. These children are normally considered at risk due to the physical and psychological difficulties, as well as medical conditions, found in them upon arrival to the adoption country. Language delays can affect cogni¬tive development, or lead to behavioural or communication problems. Consequently, there is a need for an initial linguistic assessment of newly arrived international adop¬tees. The goal of this study is to examine the language measures used to carry out such assessment. To do this, we searched different databases and selected 30 articles. From data obtained, we analyzed the tools used, the participants, and the procedures. The results show an ample diversity of assessment instruments. Results are commented on in relation to the limitations found in the assessment methods and the characteristics of the subjects to whom these methods are addressed.
