Abstract

The aging process in Europe is having a significant impact on the composition of the workforce. This, in turn, is bringing about new questions and challenges for the social agents, organizations, governments and the workers themselves. This situation has increased the interest to understand what makes people retire early. Research on this topic has mainly been carried out from two perspectives. One of them considers early retirement as an involuntary phenomena that is caused by social policies and agreements between companies, governments and unions in order to solve different structural problems. The other perspective understands this process as an individual decision and has tried to identify different factors that either push or pull workers towards early retirement. Nonetheless, research in this field has not addressed the early retirement decision in its societal and organizational context. Given that individuals do not make decisions in a social vacuum, the groups to which they belong to, should play an important role in retirement decisions. To address this gap, the present paper analyzes early retirement as a process of workrole exist, highlighting the role of social and cultural context in this process.
