Resumen

This study aims to identify those factors which can predict transgressive behavior. Emler has theorized adolescent mundane delinquency in terms of the definition of an alternative social identity to the demands of the institutional system. During the process of identity construction, people rely upon the information given by the significant others. Because of the wide range of socialization influences that affect these processes, we have made the choice of focusing in the influence of school experience and peer groups. This article approaches the issue of the contribution of school experience, peer group, and social identity to adolescent delinquent behavior. The results to a sample of high school students suggest that adolescent delinquency and normative transgression is a means of expressing and communicating an identity in conflict with institutional authority which is linked to differential experience in everyday social contexts. We also found a significant relationship between adolescents’ school experience and peer group association and delinquent behavior. All these factors increase or decrease the likelihood of delinquent behavior.
