Abstract
The reconstruction of languages and proto–languages should be considered an autonomous field in modern Linguistics. The attempt to reconstruct a language is more likely to succeed if we carefully analyze the four main kinds of data that are most useful for this important linguistic challenge: the epigraphic background, the glosses, the linguistic survivals and all the material which linguistic Typology can provide.
