Introduction: The Bolton index is one of the most common methods for determining tooth size discrepancies currently. Objectives: The aim of this review was to check the values obtained by Bolton can be applied in different populations. Material and methods: A literature search was conducted to identify clinical trials that met the inclusion criteria. Electronic databases (PubMed) and hand-searched in both English and Spanish were searched. We assessed methodological items selected. Results: A total of 151 articles, 148 in the electronic database search and three of the manual in Spanish. After analyzing these 151 articles, only 35 met the inclusion criteria selected by us, only three of them compare different populations and 32 discussed the Bolton discrepancy in a specific population. Conclusions: Most authors find different values for different populations, or larger ranges for both anterior Bolton ratio and overall Bolton ratio for the Spanish people, Peruvian, Dominican, British, Polish, Swedish, Chinese, Turkish, Syrian, Jordanian, Iranian and Saudi populations. However, some studies find values similar to Bolton as the population of China, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Iran and Nigeria. (Rev Esp Ortod. 2011;41(3):143-147)
