Abstract

This article attempts to explain why Erasmus of Rotterdam described Juan Luis Vives as an ―amphibious animal‖ and referred to him as Mercury and, above all, why Vives felt uncomfortable with these descriptions. It speculates, in addition, that this whole issue contains a possible allusion to the Dialogue between Mer-cury and Charon, a different conception of the calling of the writer.
