Resumen

This article is intended to provide an overview of the problem of morisco bandits in Valencia different from the traditional approach based on Sebastián García Martínezs work. This alternative picture relies on the use of two main sources: the treasury account books of the Maestre Racional and the criminal decisions of the Real Audiencia. The basic questions to be reviewed are the geography of the problem and its evolution from 1563 to 1609. The first is analyzed by means of distinguishing between the outlaws places of birth (or residence) and their crime scenes. The second from two different perspectives: the amount of criminal activities that took place and the ways of punishment applied. Moreover, evidence of intraethnic violence shows the need for further studies on morisco bandits strategies and motivations.
