Resumen

The Spanish textile industry has sunk into a deep crisis as a result of the increasing competition from low-cost manufacturing countries. Efficiency is not the only strategy to be competitive, although this strategy is promoted as a consequence of the presence of competitors (Porter, 1990). In this paper, it is analysed the technical efficiency of Spanish textile industry; for this purpose, a stochastic translog production frontier is estimated for the period 1995-2005 and for each of the seven groups of activity in which textile industry can be divided into. The empirical results show that, in the first half of the period, most of the textile groups achieved high levels of efficiency that we attribute to a situation of satisfaction and status maintenance; whereas during the second half of the period inefficiency grows, probably due to the liberalization of the sector (1st of January 2005). We attribute this growth to the response given to the new global competition scenario by those firms that have a dynamizing effect on the sector and are, indeed, the driving force for the change.
