Abstract
This paper presents an analysis of the inequality in per capita income in the spanish economy at the provincial level during the period 1955-1995. It is observed that the dispersion in this variable has been reduced a great deal along the period, however the reduction ocurred in the firsts 15 years of the analysis after which the reduction of inequality slowdown and eventually stops by the end of the 70's. The paper also shows that the inequality is due, mainly, to inequalities inter-regions (Comunidades Autónomas) and not to inequalities inter-provinces within regions, on the other hand if we classify provinces by per capita income thresholds the rich have behaved differently than the rest. Eventually, we observe how the aggregate measures are dominated by differences in productivity among provinces.
