Abstract

Currently, new technologies are facilitating the development of distributed teamwork. These groups may have a relatively permanent character, such as an editorial team or a team of designers in separate departments of a large manufacturing company. Organizational and Work psychologists are challenged to provide theories and models for the analysis and design of these groups. The aim of this study is to analyze the interactional process of groups in the mediated communication context (uninhibited behavior and management conflict). The present study used an objective and observational methodology and a system of group behavior categories. This paper presents the results of a laboratory experiment comparing three communicational media: face to face, electronic mail and video-conference, in a multidecision task («Moon Survival»). The results show that the use of observational methodology provides important information about group functioning and interactional processes, and offers a differential analysis according to the technologies employed by the groups.
