Abstract

This paper provides an historical review about the introduction of the concept of "dejection cones" in Spain and its dissemination from France. According to the A. Surell's proposal (1841), a "dejection cone" is the lower part of the alpine streams. This concept was accepted very early by European engineers who were committed to reduce total damages. In the Spanish case, first applications of the model were delayed until the beginning of 1860; since the 1880s the term "dejection cone" was fully used by Spanish engineers and it was applied to semi-arid ecosystems.
