Resumen

In this paper, we try to clarify a question that emerges in the elaboration of almost any life table, both for specific and general populations: the estimation of the crude mortality rates. In fact, if the rough data, or not graduated values, are inadequate the graduation methods used is irrelevant, and its sophistication too. It is really difficult that the elaborated life tables be proper. So, a brief historical analysis about the several procedures used to obtain the crude mortality rates. Besides, we go deep on the more relevant practical issues of the current method, focused on its application on the Spanish case. Its statistical-mathematical properties are studied, and some practicalities are suggested.
