Abstract

Introduction: In the last twenty years the number of multiple pregnancies has increased considerably, which can be described as epidemic. This increase is assumed to be due to increased use of assisted reproductive technology (ART). In order to analyze the trends in Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) in our country, this study has been performed using the data collected by the Spanish Fertility Society from 2002 to 2011. Research content: It has been shown that pregnancy rate is stable in artificial insemination, with a significant decrease in the rate of multiple pregnancy and an increase in abortion rate. Regarding In vitro fertilization techniques, pregnancy rates have generally increased, while multiple pregnancy rates have significantly decreased, mainly triple. Conclusions: New recommendations should be made on the number of embryos transferred depending on the technique and the characteristics of the woman or couple who uses the TRA, especially her age, in order to further decrease the multiple pregnancy rates and, in turn, keeping the success rate.
