Abstract

In this paper we discuss some results of an investigation into the teaching of algebraic solving of arithmetic-algebraic word problems to sixth grade students (11-12 years old) in a spreadsheet environment. The main aim of this study was to investigate whether the spreadsheet could be employed as a mediator to the teaching of algebraic problem solving. In this paper we describe briefly the stages and features of this research. Furthermore, we will show examples of the difficulty presented by students to give appropriate names to the quantities involved in the problems, as well as its influence in the problem solving.
