Dr. Carlos Vila (Albaida, 1982) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Organic Chemistry at the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Valencia. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry (2005, Extraordinary Award, Best Academic Record of 2005, and National Award from the Spanish Ministry of Education in 2005) and his PhD in Chemistry (2010, Excellent Cum Laude) from the University of Valencia. RESEARCH His work has focused on several research lines: --Organic synthesis and synthetic methodology for the sustainable synthesis of organic compounds, especially heterocycles. -Asymmetric catalysis using metal complexes. -Organocatalysis. -Photocatalysis using visible light. -Cross-coupling reactions using organolithium reagents catalyzed by palladium. He has carried out four research stays (59 months in total): in 2005, an Erasmus stay (5 months) at Leiden University (The Netherlands) with Prof. Overkleeft. In 2008, a predoctoral stay (4 months) at the Aarhus University (Denmark) with Prof. Jørgensen. From 2010 to 2012 (26 months), a postdoctoral stay at the RWTH Aachen University (Germany) with Prof. Rueping. From 2012 to 2014 (24 months), at the University of Groningen (The Netherlands) with Prof. Feringa (Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2016). In 2014, he returned to the University of Valencia as a “Juan de la Cierva” researcher in the group of Prof. J. R. Pedro. In 2017, he obtained a “Ramón y Cajal” contract in the Department of Organic Chemistry at the University of Valencia. In March 2023, he was promoted to Associate Professor. He has published 110 articles in JCR-indexed journals (>70% in Q1 JCR), with more than 4,400 citations and an h-index of 38 (Scopus), 5 book chapters, over 120 conference contributions, and one outreach article in Anales de la RSEQ. He has participated as a researcher in 10 research projects, has been Principal Investigator (PI) of a project funded by the BBVA Foundation, and has co-led 2 projects funded by the Spanish State Research Agency (AEI) of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities. He has been awarded recognition for three research periods (06–12; 13–18; 19–24). He has served as a reviewer for scientific journals (>420 reviews), the AEI (Spain), the Swiss National Science Foundation, and The Canada Foundation for Innovation. He is a member of expert evaluation panels for the AEI (RyC2021, PID2022) and the Czech Science Foundation (2023, 2024, 2025). TEACHING AND TRAINING He has been awarded recognition for two teaching periods (06–16; 17–21). His teaching experience (>1100 hours) has mainly focused on the Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry and the Master’s Degree in Organic Chemistry. He has co-supervised 3 PhD theses (one awarded the Extraordinary Doctorate Prize with international mention, and another with international mention). He has also supervised 19 Bachelor’s theses (TFG) and 16 Master’s theses (TFM). He has participated in 11 teaching innovation projects (2 as PI), with over 20 conference contributions, more than 10 publications, and 3 teaching material books. Additionally, he has served on examination committees for PhD theses (7), Master’s theses (7), and Bachelor’s theses (4), and has supervised 3 collaboration grants. MANAGEMENT AND OTHER ACTIVITIES Co-director of the Master’s Degree in Organic Chemistry (24–present). He has been a member of: the Faculty Board of the Faculty of Chemistry (17–21); the Senate of the Univ. of Valencia (17–21); the Governing Council of the Univ. of Valencia (20–21); and President of the CCA of the Master’s Degree in Organic Chemistry (24–present). He has participated in the Local Organizing Committee of the Chemistry Olympiad (20 and 23), the preselection committee of the Reacciona competition (20, 21, and 22), and more than 20 hiring committees.
