Zusammenfassung
This paper uses a quantitative general equilibrium model of international trade to assess the trade and welfare impact of a hypothetical trade decoupling between the European Union and China. A full decoupling would reduce Spain’s welfare level, measured in terms of per capita income in 2022, by –0.82%. Total exports would fall by –3.76%. A 20% total decoupling would reduce welfare by –0.40%. In the case of unilateral decoupling without retaliation, the EU would suffer more than China. Imposing barriers only on intermediate inputs would have a larger impact on trade and welfare than imposing barriers only on final goods.
