Abstract

Charles I of England's art collection (1600-1649) is one of the most renowned in art history. His love of painting deepened during his visit to Spain in 1623, when he unsuccessfully sought the hand of the Infanta María. Though he returned to England disappointed in his marriage pursuit, he was inspired by the extensive art collections of the Spanish court. Among the locations he visited was the home of Don Jerónimo Funes (c. 1574-c. 1663), a Valencian nobleman who gave him several Titians and weapons that likely ended up in the English royal collection.
