Extensió de la marca /g/ i desaparació del sincretisme formal en els verbs de la segona conjugació del català

Abstract

In Old Catalan, verbs as beure ‘to drink’ or moldre ‘to grind’, which had a Latin strong perfect in -ui-, presented a velar extension only in the PyTA morphome (acronym of perfecto y tiempos afines ‘perfect and related tenses’): 3rd *bibuit > bec ‘s/he drank’, 3rd moluit > molc ‘s/he ground’. In contrast, the L-pattern forms, comprising the first person of the present indicative and the whole present subjunctive, had a stem without the velar consonant: 1st bibō > beu ‘I drink’, 1stmolō > mol ‘I grind’. In this paper, departing from a corpus comprising works ranging from the 13th to the 19th century, we date the velarization process underwent by L-pattern in these verbs, which happened at the same time as the change from a strong to a weak pattern in the past tense (3rd bec ‘s/he drank’ >> begué ‘s/he drank’). The adoption of /g/, which solves the homophony between the first and the third person of the present indicative (1st beu >> bec ‘I drink’ vs. 3rd beu ‘s/he drinks’), occurs simultaneously in the whole L-pattern, unlike in other verb subclasses. Because of this reorganization, at the end of the evolutionary process, a new verb subclass emerges within the second conjugation, characterized by the presence of /g/ in both the PyTA morphome and the L-pattern.
