Abstract
In this paper, we analyze the subclass of Catalan inchoative verbs, which belongs to the third conjugation. We apply the exaptation concept (Lass 1990) to explain the changes involved in the reuse of non-functional morphological material: regarding inchoative verbs, the process of exaptation consists in the recycling of a lexical affix as a root increase the moment it loses its initial meaning of ‘change of state’ and is relegated to some verbs of the third conjugation. This functional reuse implies the appearance of a subclass of verbs in the Catalan third conjugation, which, due to its stability, has become the main inflection model in this conjugation. Thus, we show, with data from works between the 13th century and the 16th century, that the inchoative model is the main inflecting model from the Catalan earliest documents and that there is no significant migration from pure pattern to the inchoative pattern during the studied period.
