Abstract

Many studies have focused on the differences between men and women’s speech. Studies indicate that women prefer varieties that confer social prestige. To see if this preference is also reflected in speech perception, we used the matched guise technique. Over six hundred undergrad students in Barcelona, Palma and Valencia evaluated voices of men and women who spoke in Catalan and Spanish. Contrary to what we expected, our results show that women do not prefer the more prestigious varieties. However, we found that gender does play an important role in other dimensions, such as feelings of identity and belonging
