Abstract

The article investigates the popular mentality and religiousness in the late Middle Ages based on testimonies from the witnesses that were interrogated during the canonization process of Saint Vincent Ferrer. In the last medieval centuries, however, the ecclesiastical hierarchy established stricter rules that left the final decision in the hands of a cardinal commission and the pope himself. In the case of Saint Vincent Ferrer, the acts of three of the surveys carried out in Gwened / Vannes, Toulouse and Naples, were conserved, in which the ecclesiastical authorities in charge of the case questioned almost 400 testimonies of both sexes, of different ages and, above all, of very diverse social and cultural backgrounds. Their statements bring us closer to the vision that was in the Middle Ages of holiness and miracles, in which religious elements were mixed with other magical and wonderful, typical of popular culture of the time.
