Abstract

This article presents a twofold perspective of the symbolic representations of the dextrarum iunctio in the archaeological record. We firstly analyse the iconographic precedents to later describe the bodies that share the same image. In order to note similarities and differences and to clarify the originality of iconography, we have looked at comparisons with other figurative records such as reliefs, sarcophagi, jewellery, coins, mosaics, etc. The paper shows that in Roman times there was a wide representation of the dextrarum iunctio on diverse artefacts. A complete disk oil lamp is described and shown here; this oil lamp has recently been discovered in the excavations of the Roman villa of Sant Gregori (Burriana, Spain), an archaeological site where the University Jaume I in Castellón is conducting an interesting research project.
