Introduction. Boltons interarch ratio is the most popular method used in aiding diagnosis. Objectives. The purpose of this systematic review was to verify if there is a relationship between Bolton index alterations and different malocclusions. Material and methods. A literature search was conducted to identify clinical trials that met the inclusion criteria. Electronic databases (PubMed) and hand-searched in both English and Spanish were searched. We assessed methodological items selected. Results. Finally, we found 97 articles, 95 in electronic database and 2 by hand-searched. After reviewing, only 22 articles met the inclusion criteria selected by us, 13 of these studies found statistically significant differences in Bolton index among different malocclusions, while the other remaining nine not. Conclusions. Given the possible relationship between the Bolton index with different types of malocclusion, the results are contradictory. The studies find a relationship between Bolton index alterations with different types of malocclusion say that this relationship is statistically significant for Class III malocclusion.
