Zusammenfassung
Mediterranean agriculture is in a crisis, due in part to the specialization of production (fruits and vegetables) and segmentation district (coastal regions), the small size of farms, competition arising from the North African countries and Southeast Asia and the high concentration of demand (distribution companies), which almost doomed to have a testimonial weight within the economy of the countries forming the Central Mediterranean area: Valencia and Catalonia. Instead, there are few studies that attempt to provide solutions to this situation, especially proposals for solutions from within the sector. In this regard, a study is necessary as we propose in this thesis, which aims, in addition to a full and comprehensive strategic assessment of Mediterranean agriculture sector, also analyze potential strategic actions that should be formulated and implement from the social economy, in particular through agricultural cooperatives and credit, for, if not be resolved, then at least improve the current situation. To achieve the stated objectives, it will use the following method of work, a review based on both theoretical and applied by reviewing the literature and treatment of the statistics published to date (part of the thesis), as in conducting an empirical analysis (part of the thesis). To perform this study has made use of three different disciplines within the field of Economics: Applied Economics for an analysis of sectors (economic sector) and public policy, corporate finance to economic and financial analysis and the Organization Business for strategic analysis. First, is an analysis on the production structure of Mediterranean agriculture, based on statistical information on farm size, cost structure, profit margins with which they are operating and structure of agricultural markets. Second, is an analysis on the status of agricultural and credit cooperatives in the Central Mediterranean area, identifying the main factors of development. To perform this analysis, use of existing statistical data on the sector and from its major agencies. Third, there will be an empirical analysis of economic and financial situation of the agricultural cooperatives of the Central Mediterranean area, to a characterization of these entities from the study of key ratios in the industry. Fourth and finally, there will be a strategic analysis of the agricultural cooperatives of the Central Mediterranean area, to get a diagnosis and to propose strategic actions to follow from the application of the Delphi method or questionnaire to experts.
